HONG KONG’S CLAIM to be Asia’s World City may have taken a hit in recent years with protests and extended border closures keeping tourists away, but there’s light ahead for this still-thrilling metropolis. International travelers can now visit if they’re prepared to quarantine for seven days, with rumors swirling that this will ease later in the year. Meanwhile, hotels have been renovating and innovating, ready to welcome back overseas guests in style and luxury – and helping their homebound domestic audience pretend to get away from it all. Events such as Art Basel, as well as the opening of M+ and the Palace Museum affirm Hong Kong’s status as a cultural capital. The city’s restaurants are better than ever, with a raft of top-notch venues serving the gamut, from South American to Korean, French to of course Chinese cuisine – and the bars are raking in international accolades. The results of the first-ever Asia’s Best Awards should help you decide where to go now in Hong Kong (if you live here) or where to add to your list for your next trip. Kee Foong

Best Hotels in Hong Kong

When the very first Mandarin Oriental opened in 1963, it was the tallest building in Hong Kong, occupying a prime plot right on Victoria Harbour. Since then, the city has built outwards and upwards, dwarfing the 26-story landmark. Its stature as one of the region’s best hotels however, remains undiminished, a favorite of international high-fliers and local elites, pandemic notwithstanding. And for good reason. Its rooms and suites are smart, comfortable and classic, and feature great city or harbor views. The addition of a club lounge further sweetens the deal.

Nearly every food and beverage venue here is a beloved institution. There’s Man Wah for Michelin-starred Cantonese cuisine with a view; more Michelin stars at the Mandarin Grill + Bar; club-like The Chinnery for fish and chips or a mean curry; the world’s only Krug Room; and afternoon tea at the Clipper Lounge, with, said one voter, “their scones and just-the-right-taste rose petal jam.” Newly opened The Aubrey was recognized as one of Asia’s 50 Best Bars in its first year of operation, though for many loyalists, the only place for an ice-cold tankard of beer or stiff martini is at the Captain’s Bar. The Mandarin Spa also has legions of fans, but what makes this hotel really special is that it has been setting the hospitality benchmark for nearly 60 years. In the words of one voter, “the service there is far superior than most hotels. Nothing is too big or too small, and the staff go above and beyond.”
