CHANGI AIRPORT’S PASSPORT control officers are efficiently stamping away, as per times of old. The streets around Raffles Hotel once again crackle with the voices of foreign tourists — unmasked (outdoors, at least) and now unbound by the forbidding two-week hotel quarantine that kept visitor numbers negligible the past two years. Restaurants are free to host large, celebratory tables of unrelated individuals, and to serve intoxicating beverages after 10 p.m. again. So grown-up! Hawker centers are packed with ravenous locals and curious overseas culinary adventurers… the Lion City is back and open for business — or pleasure. If you’re lucky enough to secure a reservation at the city-state’s finest hotels, acclaimed cocktail spots and dining destinations, they’re primed to offer you a warm, humid welcome. These are your voter picks for Singapore in the Asia’s Best Awards 2022. Christian Barker

Best Hotels in Singapore

1. Capella Singapore

Situated in a prime beachside position within 30 acres of lush gardens and rainforest, Capella Singapore more than delivers on the greenery, ocean views and proximity to sand you’d expect from a tropical resort. Despite being in Sentosa – and thus a blessed getaway for staycationers over the past two years – it’s just 10-20 minutes’ drive from Singapore’s central business district and the city’s best restaurants, museums, shops and theaters.

Design-wise, the resort is a mix of heritage colonial structures, the elegant contemporary minimalism of renowned British architects Foster + Partners, and a recent interiors reno by André Fu, pleasing both classicists and modernists. Our voters also highlighted the beauty of the three idyllic outdoor pools — one of which, guests sans offspring will be pleased to learn, is designated strictly for grown-ups. (Of course, if you choose a villa with a private pool, you’ll be guaranteed the seclusion to explore adults-only underwater activities.)

That’s not to say the Capella lacks family-friendliness; in fact, with tailored experiences and cuisine, munchkins are made extremely welcome here. As are ‘fur kids’ — the Capella’s pioneering petcation program is considered one of Singapore’s best, pampering canine and feline guests with gourmet meals and plush bedding.

Human food at Capella is great, too. The multicultural breakfast fare is outstanding, as is the haute-Chinese cuisine at Cassia. Perhaps most importantly, staff excel under the guidance of five-star veteran general manager, Yngvar Stray. As one of our voters put it: “Top-notch service by Capella! I will never forget the experience!”
