THE GATES HAVE BEEN flung wide open and Vietnam’s up and away. Who would’ve thought in lockdown last year this country would be in a position now to say xin chào to international tourists? While the plan to welcome five million visitors by year’s end might be ambitious, the Vietnamese are sure going to give it a try, with quarantine-free travel and no Covid-19 test requirements for entry. Meanwhile, domestic travel is surging as the Vietnamese thirst for discovering their own country is bouncing back as they rush to experience the world’s longest glass bridge, ride in a fully-submersible transparent submarine and go on African safari on a tropical island just 60 minutes from Ho Chi Minh City. So read about your choices among the winners of the 2022 Asia’s Best Awards, and start looking forward to pho and ca fe sua da in Vietnam. Matt Cowan

Best City Hotels in Vietnam

1. Sheraton Saigon

When it comes to where to plant yourself within the buzz of Ho Chi Minh City, it’s all about location, location, location. And the Sheraton Saigon Hotel & Towers has it in spades. Adjacent to historic Dong Khoi Street once known as Rue Catinat and made famous by Graham Greene’s novel The Quiet American, this elegant five-star hotel is set amid a vibrant shopping and emerging hospitality scene. As one voter summed it up: “It has an unbeatable location in the center of the city. We loved that we could walk everywhere to all the trendy bars, restaurants and tourist attractions.” Indeed, just around the corner is the Opera House built in 1897 and where arguably Vietnam’s most enthralling cultural performance, Teh Dar, is performed, while Saigon staples Ben Thanh Market, the War Remnants Museum, and the Reunification Palace are a few blocks away.

After sightseeing, guests can retreat from the pulsating energy of Saigon’s streets by unwinding in the Sheraton’s luxurious accommodation featuring rooms and suites with signature amenities and furnishings tastefully done in sync with both the city’s past and its exciting future. And if anything can drag them away from the stunning city views in the rooms, it’s the hotel’s outlets like the Aqua Day Spa, a destination in itself that’s distinctly Vietnamese, and the mouthwatering Saigon Cafe for a buffet lunch, The Lounge for afternoon tea with a difference, and the highly-regarded Li Bai Restaurant for some of the most authentic dim sum in town.

Best Beach / Upcountry Resorts in Vietnam

Where do we start? In Heaven perhaps? But there’s also Sky, Earth and Sea – the aptly named four levels of InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, accessible by hillside funicular, that hint at how in tune with nature this stunning beach resort is. Enveloped by 39 hectares of pristine jungle within a nature reserve, it has its own 700-meter secluded beach protected by the resort’s sustainability initiatives headed up by their full-time staff zoologist, one of only a few in the world, who also oversees the protection of Vietnam’s native, critically endangered, red-shanked douc langur that calls the Son Tra Peninsula home.

When it opened in 2012, the colorful, non-traditional resort was a design revolution for Vietnam. Credit to award-winning starchitect Bill Bensley, who brought his hallmark stylistic elements of bold high-contrast decor with whimsical touches aimed to surprise and delight no matter where you find yourself during your stay. As one voter commented: “It is just so beautiful and different from all other beach resorts I have stayed in.”

And as experiential travel continues to grip this part of the world, the resort offers opportunities for wildlife, design, coffee art, food and culture encounters. With La Maison 1888, Vietnam’s first restaurant to feature a Michelin-starred chef, it’s hard to sum up this place in just a few words. But perhaps this voter captures it best: “Beautiful design, friendly, good food, nice view, green, clear and fresh air.” What more could you want?
