IF YOU FANCY A DUSTING of snow this winter, news alert: Finnair is gearing up to introduce its elevated business class experience to flights from Bangkok and Phuket to Helsinki starting in October, following on the launch of their AirLounge pods on their Singapore to Helsinki route this month. This new style of seating is revolutionizing the traditional business-class landscape with comfy cushion-Lego lounge chairs that we are super psyched about.

The one feature that has sparked some initial ripples of shock among frequent business-class flyers is the fact that the new Finnair AirLounge seats do not recline. Yes, you read that right: the seats designed by award-winning seat manufacturer Collins Aerospace do not recline, not even by an inch.

However, Finnair’s intention is far from preventing you from enjoying a good night’s (or day’s) sleep. In fact, its innovative chairs – Finnair is the only airline to currently provide them – are inspired by lounge furniture and designed to “maximize your comfort, space, and freedom to move during a long-haul flight,” according to its marketing spiel.

The seat’s wide and high cocoon-like shells ensure complete privacy from other flyers, almost creating your own personal nest. They also provide ample space to sit upright, lounge with your legs resting on an ottoman, use infill panels to craft a work space for laptops, and come complete with a mattress and duvet to lie down and squeeze in some sleep. Famed Finnish fashion house Marimekko has worked its creative magic designing distinctive pillow and duvet covers.

The unique seating has certainly bagged rave reviews from users, thanks to its innovation. Turning Left for Less, one of the UK’s leading blogs on luxury travel on a relative budget, said, “Although the seat doesn’t recline, this was not an issue at all… It’s like sitting on your sofa at home, you can almost lie down or sit completely up or anything in between. You could even sit sideways with your knees up on the seat if you wanted as it’s so big!”

Further brightening the experience is the in-seat lighting that can be personalized depending on your mood. A bonus is it’s been designed in partnership with Jetlite to help combat the annoying side effects of jetlag, and it is inspired by serene Nordic nature — that includes even the Northern Lights as the cabin is dimmed for sleep. Pretty cool!

Other standout features include the heaps of storage and impressive connectivity. Think USB A, USB C, PC power, and wireless mobile charging – a nifty gadget where all you have to do is place your device on a small table and it starts charging.

The airline launched these luxury, Lego-like travel pods on select Airbus A350s and A360s routes earlier this year. The AirLounge offerings rolled out on the daily Finnair Helsinki-Singapore route on September 22 and will be available on Bangkok and Phuket to Helsinki routes from late-October. We’re ready for liftoff… followed swiftly by lie down.
