NOWHERE IN THAILAND does beach clubs like Phuket. Take the country’s most popular island (and your favorite in Asia), toss in a diverse array of fun-seeking visitors and residents, and mix with its trio of turquoise sea, golden sand, and gob-smacking sunsets that paint the sky a blaze of orange, red, pink and purple: you get a hard-to-beat destination for toes-in-the-sand deep-house chill. Post-pandemic, the beach clubs of Phuket are bouncing back, big time. There’s been a string of stylish openings, with most venues concentrated on the west coast between Bangtao and Patong. Many are hotel-run but open to the public, though there are cool independent ones, too. Whether you want to party or relax, cocktail in hand, here’s our roundup of our favorite beach clubs new and old in the Pearl of the Andaman.

Carpe Diem

Arriving at Carpe Diem, it’s clear that the newest beach club in Phuket is targeting sophisticated travelers and locals. A winding pathway guides you along an immaculate sweep of lawn to a low-slung modernist-style building. Swaying coconut trees dot the courtyard, and patrons are treated to expansive views of the eight-kilometer-long Bangtao Beach. Founders Benny de Bellis and Bruce Hanrahan are hospitality pros, having worked as head waiter at the Ritz in London and as part of the founding team of Miami’s famed Nikki Beach, respectively. The focus here is on quality seafood, pizza, pasta and Mediterranean fare, and Benny and his bar team mix a mean martini too. Cabanas and sunbeds were yet to be installed on our visit but they should land soon.

Pine Beach Bar

Family-friendly Pine Beach Bar, as the name suggests, is lined with towering pine trees right on the sand at the more upscale northern end of Kamala Beach. Part of the new InterContinental Phuket Resort, the cool pool and sunbeds can be enjoyed by outside visitors, though priority is given to hotel guests. A highlight at Pine is the free-flow Sunday brunch, which comes with a mountain of delicious dishes brought to your table. Think seafood platter with oysters, snow crab and lobster; truffle pizza; T-bone steak; and steamed whole fish, Thai-style. What’s more, service is attentive, drinks are topped up regularly, the beats chilled, and the sunsets glorious.

It’s worth a detour to the Anantara Layan Phuket Resort for a smart yet relaxed beach club experience in an exclusive slice of paradise. The resort’s new Beach House Layan combines three great venues in one, within a sleek concrete and timber building overlooking a highly Insta-friendly bay. The top floor is home to a stylish rooftop bar with cabanas, stunning views, excellent cocktails, and a live band playing Latin American music on weekends. Below is a restaurant that serves well-executed Thai cuisine, while the breezy ground floor pool bar and diner runs all the way down to the gentle sea, where at low tide you can wade for meters and meters til the warm water splashes above your knees.

Hugo Hub is a lovely laid-back alternative to the big and slick operators. This bohemian, hybrid café, workspace and bar on Bangtao Beach features food trucks, bean bags and a monthly wine and craft market. As the sun goes down, the tempo goes up, with a roster of DJs and live performers until late. Its monthly full moon parties feature thrilling fire shows and are free to attend, though advance bookings are recommended.

For those who want to live and breathe beach clubs, check into Baba Beach Club, which bills itself as a “hotel for music lovers,” on Natai Beach, just north of Phuket on the mainland. Run by the team behind Baba Nest at luxury resort Sri Panwa, music plays throughout the hotel and can be heard in the suites and villas, which come with curated playlists, naturally. The centerpiece of the resort is the beachfront pool with futuristic swim-up bar, where local and international DJs pump out tunes through a thumping Funktion One surround sound system. The club is open to visitors, with day-use villas available for your booking pleasure.

Lobster, a floating beach club, turns up the fun factor on sunset cruises. The sleek white and red double deck catamaran cuts a fine shape as it sails around the clear waters of southern Phuket, stopping at private islands along the way. By day, you can play on water slides, or snorkel, paddle, or simply chill. As evening comes, the LED ceiling lights up and the DJ turns up the volume—you might even get treated to a drag show, you lucky b.
