WALKING INTO The Peri Hua Hin, you could be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped back in time and across the Pacific. It’s got a 1960’s motel vibe, heyday Miami meets Hollywood golden era. Glancing around the blue-and-white-striped deck chairs, you can picture sirens in their high-waist bikini bottoms and corset-style tops tossing around a beach ball.
What am I saying? Actually, you can see them, too, thanks to the revival of those demure swimsuits in Thailand — and to the breezy Melrose Place atmosphere that sees small groups of friends lounging together in beanbags in and around the pool and under the shady gazebo all day long.
In this land of Aperol spritzes, just a hundred-meter-walk from the beach, there is one room built especially for pets, with a dog-washing station and stylish doggie door among the special amenities, and two two-bedroom suites with ample living space and indoor trees in the lounge rooms. Each is designed slightly differently; one has a rattan hammock and the other a private terrace, for example.
But, if you opt for one of the standard rooms, not to worry, the airy beach house-chic Surf Lodge is super comfy for co-working. Chow Mong restaurant is a minimalist-style mess hall specializing in fresh, fresh seafood (get the beer-brewed clams and the fritto misto). And Malo is their Instagram-tastic tiki bar.
Which is where I sat down with a prominent couple of the Bangkok social set to talk about Pride. Tube Gallery is one of the best-known fashion houses in Thailand. With dynamic, cutting-edge designs in ready-to-wear to semi-couture, they’ve showcased all across Asia as well as Sydney and Paris Some of their more lithe confections make for the glammest of resortwear, as you’ll see in the video.
Tube Gallery’s co-founder Saksit Pisalasupongs and his hubby Andrew Heard, a happily retired consulting honcho from Australia, shared with me their coming out stories, their favorite places to travel in the world, what they hope for the marriage equality movement in Thailand, and much more.
Take a look, and happy Pride!
