This year’s World’s Best Awards survey closed on March 2, just before widespread stay-at-home orders were implemented as a result of COVID-19. The results reflect our readers’ experiences before the pandemic, but we hope that this year’s honorees will inspire your trips to come — whenever they may be.

1. Anantara Chiang Mai Resort & Spa
Thailand

Claiming top real estate on the tranquil Ping River, Anantara Chiang Mai Resort nabbed the number one spot in Southeast Asia in a win for Thai hospitality. There’s a lot to be wooed by on these lush grounds: chic Kerry Hill design; spacious rooms and suites with garden/water views; a spy-thriller restaurant concept inspired by the ex–British consulate building it inhabits; experiences like elephant walking, muay Thai, Ayurvedic wellness and cooking classes. The resort also wins on location, within walking distance of the Old City and with Chiang Mai’s famous night markets just around the corner.
