Why This Maldivian Eco-Resort Is ‘Powered by Plants’

It’s easy being green at Gili Lankanfushi, thanks to this innovative new plant-based package.

Dec 11, 2020

SITUATED IN THE NORTH MALÉ ATOLL, Gili Lankanfushi has long been a leader when it comes to protecting the fragile ecosystem of the Maldives. Since this archipelago is one of the most biodiverse and naturally beautiful places on Mother Nature, this eco-chic resort goes the extra mile when it comes to taking care of its surrounding environment.

With awareness of climate change and ecological concerns on the rise, more travelers than ever are pledging to leave lighter footprints when traversing the globe. To that end, the resort recently introduced a new ‘Powered by Plants’ package, which helps travelers further reduce their impact on the planet. Once guests arrive at the 45-villa resort, they will be treated to delicious plant-based menus drawing on Maldivian gastronomic traditions.

From aloe vera and beetroot tartar with arugula to seared radish and spinach cannelloni, these meals are both hearty and healthy. While meatless meals naturally have a lower carbon footprint, the resort goes a step further still by processing all of its food waste in an advanced rocket composter, creating fertilizer for an on-site organic garden.

Guests feeling inspired by all of these delicious vegan treats can learn how to create their own with Chef Hari in a private Gili Vegan Cooking Class, in which they’ll learn how to prepare Maldivian curries, juices and smoothies. Other nature-based activities include a private vinyasa flow yoga class on the beach or a holistic healing treatment using cruelty-free vegan products such as Voya’s Serenergise body oil at Meera Spa.

A dedicated local marine biologist will be on hand to take guests on a guided snorkeling session to learn about Gili Lankanfushi’s pioneering Coral Lines Project, which helps nurture new corals on the thriving house reef. Learn all about this vibrant underworld at Gili Veshi, a marine research center that studies everything from local sea turtle populations to manta rays.
